An SOP acts as a tool for the faculty of school/ University admissions committees to assess the knowledge, passion, motivation, intellectual maturity, and readiness of applicants to pursue their education at their institution.

So, why do you need to submit an SOP?
A Statement of Purpose remains the most important element of the admission process, either to a course or a post, thus specified. It is needed to justify your intention behind applying for a specific course or post. The SoP is your chance to impress the admission committee by presenting your profile through an essay. The committee wants to see whether you take an interest in letting them know how much you want to study/work at their school/university/workplace. It allows the committee, management, or authority to peek into your background, which is almost a narrative of your entire application.

Here are some tips & guidelines to write an SOP: Always remember that your SOPs should be written purely from a practical perspective and from the point-of-view of those who will actually use them. Below are a few simple yet important guidelines that you should keep in mind while writing an end-user-focused SOP.

1. Avoid working on the SOP at the last minute SOP is not something that must be done in a hurry. Take your time, prepare in advance, make two, three drafts before finalizing on the one that you would send it to out.

2. Write concisely, clearly, and follow a step-by-step format Always keep your sentences as brief as possible. Use simple and common terms wherever required. Never overcomplicate the meaning of instruction or sentence by using too many technical terms or jargon-filled terminology. Use simpler, clearer words or phrases as much as you can.

3. Do not use Informal language and Slangs Keep it as professional as possible. Ensure that your tone is polite, respectful, and formal.

4. Write in the active voice and present the main idea first It’s important to be mindful of what you write as well as how you write it. Simple action-oriented verbs such as “identify,” “direct,” “evaluate,” and “review” get the point across without requiring interpretation. If possible, try not to use the passive voice while structuring sentences, as this can confuse or misdirect attention away from important ideas.

5. Don’t indulge in ambiguity Avoid using generic terms that give no tangible meaning. Words like “periodic”, “typical”, “general” and “should” don’t emphasize any consistent direction or execution of a directive — the main goal of having an SOP in the first place. It is always appreciated to give demonstrative examples of academic brilliance or professional competence, instead of making vague statements.

6. Be ABSOLUTELY CAREFUL with the IMPORTANT terms Bear in mind the usage of certain words need to be definite and not left to the evaluator to decide your thought process. The terms here that you need to be careful with are “may”, “must”, and “should”. Remember that using the word “may” gives personnel decision-making power and/or flexibility depending on the context. “Must,” is always mandatory and “should” is by nature conditional.

7. Make sure your SOP looks like an SOP Should your SOP consist of long and dense sentences or paragraphs, chances are, the emphasis on a presentation or the essence of the SOP may be lost. Usage of bullet points and lists are particularly effective for certain pieces of information to be communicated, as they draw attention to important points and slow the pace of the reader.
